State FCCLA in Wichita

Abi Shearer will be going to Nationals in San Diego this summer.
She won gold for her STAR Event at the State Conference in Wichita early this week.

The Ultimate Leadership Experience

Council Grove FCCLA got a firsthand taste of “The Ultimate Leadership Experience” last Wednesday at District D elections.

Ally Hower, Jessica Filkin, and Abi Shearer were elected as district officers for the 22-23 school year. Jessica and Ally will serve as co-VPs of STAR Events and Abi will serve as the VP of Power of One. With this election, Council Grove will have had a district officer for eight years in a row!

On Wednesday, thirty members of the CGHS FCCLA Chapter virtually participated in their District Leadership Conference. Carly Wells, who is the Chapter President and District VP of Membership, helped to organize the event. She explained that “usually, we go to a different school throughout the district. We usually have a keynote speaker that speaks, and then we have four to five breakout sessions people can go to, and the kids have a lot of fun.” Although none of this could happen in person this year, FCCLA leadership tried to keep as much as they could while keeping Covid-19 restrictions in mind. While socially distanced in the Auditorium, students played games, participated in a workshop, and listened to Keynote Speaker, Molly Kennedy, who encouraged members to “flip their twenty,” meaning that when she changed her attitude, she changed her life for the better, and everyone can do the same.

 

Connor Garver, Matt Mangiaracino, and Jude Kormanik won the scavenger hunt by finding something red (napkin holder), white (spoon), and something that represents leadership (recycling can).

FCCLA State Leadership Conference

The Council Grove chapter won the Diamond Membership Award. They doubled their membership from last year, the highest percentage increase in the state.

RaeLyn Scott was named to the State Board of Directors for the Kansas Chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) at the State Leadership Conference in Wichita, April 7-10. The Board is composed of 15 members, with a student majority. RaeLyn will be serving as the Student At Large #3 position for a one year term. The state board is the governing body of FCCLA and has the final say in all policy for the group. They also overview the organization's budget, assets, and employees and help to secure corporate partners.

Chase will be working with two Wabaunsee High students and speaking on the topic, Stop the Violence, at different schools, FCCLA Fall Leadership Conference, and State next year. FCCLA chooses a number of teams to speak on a variety of topics every year. Chase will receive training at Nationals in Anaheim, California this summer.

Jaycie Swisher qualified for FCCLA Nationals this summer in Anaheim, California wither her Say Yes to FCS Star Event.

This team worked with the extension office to do a story walk, then did one on their own. They put each page of a picture book on a yard sign and spread them around the River Walk; publicized the event on social media, at the elementary school, and at the pre-school; and then walked the children through the story.

National Cluster Meeting in Louisville

 RaeLyn Scott took 4th in Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation, and Casen Steere took 6th in the FCCLA knowledge test. Jordan Kelley took first in culinary math. Kayla Watson was 4th in Consumer Math.

Michelle empowers future leaders to live with courage, find their authenticity, and embrace their growth paths. Born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, to a family of Holocaust survivors, Michelle was accustomed to living with fear. But when she moved to New York to pursue a masters in branding at the School of Visual Arts, Michelle quickly realized that NYC was not for the fearful. In an effort to rewrite her definition of fear, Michelle completed a project where she faced 100 fears in 100 days.

Blake uses live music, storytelling, and appropriate humor to provide students with the keys to unlock their full potential in ways to inspire their peers to do the same. Blake shows students how to access all of the opportunities available to them and provides tools to immediately implement these examples.

Fall Leadership Conference in Centralia

Yesterday, CGHS FCCLA members who attended the Fall Leadership Conference learned about seizing opportunities from the keynote speaker, watched Casen Steere and RaeLyn Scott perform their duties as district officers, and participated in breakout sessions, a dance party, and a lesson on clapping as a group.
