Slow Getting Up (796.332 JAC)

I have heard lots of people talking about concussions among football players, particularly pro athletes. One first-person account that looks interesting and that is new to our library is Slow Getting Up by Nate Jackson. The subtitle is "A Story of NFL Survival from the Bottom of the Pile" which kind of gives you a taste of what the book might be like. Football leaves me cold most of the time because, let's face it, I just don't get it, but I like good writing, and this looks like a pretty interesting book.

Though not exhaustive by any means, Catherine Hauber's Hiking Guide to Kansas is a nice introduction. For Council Grove, she only mentions three short hikes around the lake, but she includes a nice picture and clear instructions for how to find the trailhead and what a hiker can expect to see. The book is organized by region, then by county, and finally by specific place. 

Kansas Hiking Trail Finder is a nice supplement to the book. American Trails also has a good page with links to Kansas hiking, cycling, and other outdoor recreation. I also like Best Hiking Trails of Kansas.

Stuff You Should Know Without the U. S. Government Telling You

Turns out Americans don't get enough exercise.  Do tell.  Not only THAT, but if you are an inactive teen, you are at risk for more mental and behavioral problems.

"In adolescents, physical inactivity is associated with emotional and behavioral problems, suggests a Finnish study of more than 7,000 teenagers who took part in a survey that assessed their levels of physical activity and mental and emotional health.

Boys who reported less than one hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity a week had more symptoms of anxiety, withdrawal and depression than boys who were more active. Inactive girls had similar problems, and were more likely than inactive boys to also report sleep problems and rule-breaking behaviors.

Both inactive boys and girls were more likely than active peers to have social and attention problems.

'Adolescence is already a complicated and sometimes difficult stage of life -- emotionally, mentally and physically,' study author Marko T. Kantomaa said in an American College of Sports Medicine news release.

'Compounding that with negative mental and emotional effects brought on by physical inactivity does not help young people ease into adulthood. Physical activity could be a highly effective and relatively easy way to help that transition and could, in addition, lead to establishment of lifelong healthy habits,' Kantomaa said."
