Music on the Web

Most of the time now, I listen to music on the web and don’t have any need to download it. My laptop benefits the most  from this inclination since it’s not weighed down by music files, thus saving me tons of space and virus headaches (you eMule users know what I’m talking about). Anyhow, if I do choose to download music, I can always do it over at iTunes or my favorite place in the web: Jamendo. (taken from Your Guide to Music on The Web on TechCrunch)

Cause for Outrage

While poking around on The List Universe, I found the Top 10 Most Overrated Bands guaranteed to make you say, "I always thought that band was overrated." or "I love that band!" perhaps at the very same time.

 

Opera

Ok, I know everybody but me is sick of opera posts.  This is the last one, I promise.  The library owns Opera 101: A Complete Guide to Learning and Loving Opera.  Not surprisingly, it has never been checked out.  In the introduction by Placido Domingo, he says, "Operagoing at its best is about the rekindling of the soul, about having an open window into what makes us human."  Well, now.

I found this blog that has some nifty photos and commentary on some amazing looking modern productions.  The header takes forever to load and is most definitely not worth it, so carry on and explore without it. -mh

Pomposity is a Good Thing.

This week, I found myself at an East Village Opera Company concert, sort of against my will, and I must say, they ROCKED.  "By embracing what Peter Kiesewalter calls 'the pomposity of rock and the pomposity of opera' without demeaning or satirizing either form, the East Village Opera Company flies . . . ."  Hear them.  -mh

Sweeney Todd

Is it scary that Sweeney Todd popped into my head over the weekend?  I do not have much patience for gratuitous violence OR for Sondheim, but I have to admit that the music for ST is pretty good.  It's the blood I can't stand.  It will be at McCain in Manhattan, KS on September 25, so if you are curious about it or want to see it live after you've seen the movie, now is your chance.

Much to my distress, we also have the book in the library.  How did that happen?
