Though the publisher connects Jackaby with both Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Who to snag fans, I thought it was something fresher than that, with the potential for sequels that will continue to improve as the author gains experience. The book gains momentum as it develops and is populated with like-able characters, fairy tale undercurrents, and a gruesome villain. I was drawn to the book by the wonderful cover, but I read the whole thing, and I don't always.
Students who appreciate mysteries, historical fiction, and the paranormal might like this one.
