If you are looking for your standard
Victorian England steampunk, you are looking in the wrong place. If you are
looking for steampunk themed stories with a twist, then you are in the right
place. This anthology was not your typical example of steampunk fiction. It
included both short stories and graphic chapters. The places and times ranged
from the there-and-then to the here-and-now.
Many of the tales were emotionally
gripping while still holding that steampunk sense of adventure. Of these, The Last Ride of the Glory Girls and SteamGirl were both especially
fantastic. One takes place in an alternate old west on another planet. It
recounts the events leading up to the last robbery of a band of outlaws called
the Glory Girls. The steampunk twist mainly comes from the Enigma Apparatus, a
device used to stop and travel through time.
The other story, SteamGirl, is a love story about the nerdy boy getting the girl.
Only this time, it isn’t the hot girl, it is the nerdy, outcast girl who can
tell amazing stories. This particular narrative leaves you wondering whether
her stories are truly fiction or accounts of the girl’s own adventures.
I highly recommend this anthology. It
is a good read for anyone that is interested in steampunk, gadgets, or
adventure. It also provides a good opportunity to those people who get bored
when reading thick novels because each section is its own adventure. (Mary Alsobrooks)
