The Power of Art

Over the last month, I slowly watched a BBC documentary called THE POWER OF ART discussing eight great master sculptors and painters, what gives their work power, and the impact their art has made in the world. The brainchild of historian and narrator Simon Schama, the eight, one-hour episodes made me look at art in a new way, though, admittedly, I had some trouble with Schama's melodrama in spots, and his snottiness in others. But, hey, it's the BBC! I expect melodrama and snottiness. At least Schama has an opinion, is not afraid to express it, and is unfailingly interesting.

The artists Schama discusses are Bernini, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, David, Turner, Van Gogh, Picasso, and Rothko.

The Help (FIC Stockett)

The Help is just as good as everybody says, though after reading the book, you will never look at chocolate pie the same again. My sources say the movie is good as well. Read the book first, though!

 The humor is sharp and smart, the plot interesting, and the characters are likeable and have real depth to them. Just when I thought I knew who somebody was and had placed them in a nice, neat, little box, I read a new detail that made me see them in a whole new light.

This is a "woman's book"--a step up from chick lit--but, really, I think anybody with a heart and a soul would enjoy reading it.

Kansas Memory

Kansas Memory is the largest digital repository of primary sources on Kansas history. It includes more than 160,000 images of truly unique photos, maps, diaries, government records, posters, pamphlets, artifacts, films, audio recordings, and much more from the collections of the Kansas Historical Society. The collections span the entire history of Kansas from pre-settlement to the present with thousands of items from Kansas Territory and the Civil War. An interactive map allows you to review primary sources on your own county or region, and many items are correlated with Kansas teaching standards especially for teachers and students. Michael A. 9/11 Memorial Interactive Timeline

Mary recommended this site last year, and I've been saving it to post until this week when the world is remembering the 9/11 attacks. This interactive timeline is beautifully designed, easy to navigate, and informative.

Online Books Tumblereadables
