Codex Alera (FIC Butcher)

Beginning with Furies of Calderon, Jim Butcher's fantasy series has unpredictable plotting, humor, and lively characters. I was on the edge of my seat wondering if anybody was going to survive to the end of every book of the series, and I never knew quite what was going to happen next. If you like fantasy and are ready to try something a little more challenging than what you read in middle school, give this a try.

As an interesting aside, one of the reasons Butcher wrote this series was in response to a challenge that he could not write a quality fantasy series derived from cliches. One of those influential cliches is Pokemon. Naturally, the cliche undergoes quite the makeover in Butcher's hands. (MHouse)

Stardust (FIC GAI)

Neil Gaiman, one of the finest fantasy storytellers of modern times, wrote Stardust to honor the simpler fairy tales and fantasies of times past, where a town was akin to a place magical and a person could wonder without restraint if he or she so choosed. What Gaiman accomplishes with this storytelling endeavor is as imaginative as Tinkerbell’s pixie dust in transporting the reader through a tale of love, danger and adventure. Water for Elephants (FIC GRU)

 

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen opens with a day of disaster at the circus and Jacob Jankowski admitting he kept a secret from that day for over 70 years. The novel then moves to the ninety-something year old Jacob in a nursing home.
