Sally and Gillian Owens have been misunderstood throughout their whole childhood; they live in a big, old house just down the street, where there is always something thriving in the garden, and no one dares to come near. The girls live with their aunts, whom everyone thinks are witches. Their classmates treat them terribly, but they endure it all together. No one would even think about talking to the aunts during the day, but this is not so when twilight falls. When the light is fading and their faces can’t be seen, women come to their door, asking for help in matters of love, lust, and anything in between. Although the sisters are supposed to be in bed, they sneak down the back staircase and peek in on the nightly rituals performed to meet the women’s wishes. They promise they will never let their passions get the best of them, and watch, amazed, the women in their kitchen who pace, cry, fall to their knees, and beg the aunts for help. Despite these promises, their futures turn out to be much different from what they imagined all those nights… (Review by Sarah H.)
