Kansas History Sites

If you've never toured the home of William Allen White in Emporia, summer is a great time to do it. They've just added Sunday afternoon to their schedule.

If you teach Kansas history or use the WAW lists (hopefully that's all of you who work in grades 3-8!), you owe it yourself to tour Mr. White's home and sit on his lovely porch.  
Here are the hours:

New Hours at the W.A. White State Historic Site:
9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Wednesday - Saturday

1 - 5 p.m. Sunday

Last tour begins at 4:30 p.m.

$3 adults; $1 students; KSHS, Inc., members and children five and under admitted free

I took my thirteen year old niece on a KS History trip in June. We went to Leavenworth, Atchison (for Earhart's house), Topeka (KS History Museum) and WAW's house in Emporia.

Maybe others can recommend good summer "local" trips for teachers/librarians...we know the learning doesn't end when school's out.

WAW Selection Committee Application

KASL is searching for a candidate to represent us on the William Allen White Children's Book Awards Selection Committee.

To apply, fill out the form. 

This appointment is a three-year commitment. Being a member of this  
committee requires reading at least 60% of the books nominated  
(generally around 90 books) and attending one face-to-face meeting  
each fall to select the master lists. Check the WAW website for more  
information.

Please submit by July 24, 2009.

The appointment will be announced after the KASL Council meeting on  
July 31.

2009 Kansas Notable Books List

On May 28 State Librarian Christie Brandau and Roy Bird, Director of the Kansas Centerfor the Book at the State Library of Kansas unveiled the 2009 Kansas Notable Books List.This fourth annual roll of honor includes fiction, nonfiction, adult and children’s books, each of which was published during 2009 and identified as outstanding for different reasons.

A committee of the KCFB identified the titles and submitted them to the State Librarian Christie Brandau, for the final decision.  The 2009 Kansas Notable Book advisory committee included representatives from academic, public and school libraries, authors, booksellers, publishers, and the media.  Press releases were sent out across the state to daily and weekly newspapers on May 28.  The authors of the 15 Kansas Notable Books will be honored at a reception hosted by the State Library of Kansas later this summer.

The 2009 Notable Books List continues to raise awareness of writing by Kansans and about Kansas.

Two Final Awards

The Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, established in 1954, honors an author or illustrator whose books are published in the United States and have made a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children. Ashley Bryan has been named the 2009 Wilder Award winner. His numerous works include “Dancing Granny,” “Beat the Story-Drum, Pum-Pum,” and “Beautiful Blackbird.”

William C. Morris Award. “A Curse Dark as Gold,” written by Elizabeth C. Bunce and published by Arthur A. Levine Books, an imprint of Scholastic, Inc., is the winner of the first Morris Award.

Pura Belpré Awards 2009

Pura Belpré Awards honoring Latino authors and illustrators whose work best portrays, affirms and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in children's books. 

“Just in Case” illustrated by Yuyi Morales is the winner of the 2009 Belpré Illustrator Award. 

“The Surrender Tree: Poems of Cuba’s Struggle for Freedom” by Margarita Engle, is the winner of the 2009 Belpré Author Award. 

Three Belpré Illustrator Honor Books for illustration were named: 

“Papá and Me” illustrated by Rudy Gutierrez, written by Arthur Dorros

“The Storyteller’s Candle / La velita de los cuentos” illustrated by Lulu Delacre, written by Lucía González

“What Can You Do with a Rebozo?” illustrated by Amy Córdova, written by Carmen Tafolla

Three Belpré Author Honor Books were named:

Margaret A. Edwards Award 2009

Margaret A. Edwards Award for significant and lasting contribution to young adult literature. 

Laurie Halse Anderson is the recipient of the 2009 Margaret A. Edwards Award honoring her outstanding lifetime  contribution to writing for teens for the following books.

Theodor Seuss Geisel Award 2009

Theodor Seuss Geisel Award for the most distinguished book for beginning readers. “Are You Ready to Play Outside?” written and illustrated by Mo Willems is the 2009 Geisel Award winner.

Four Geisel Honor Books were named: 

“Chicken said, ‘Cluck!’” by Judyann Ackerman Grant, illustrated by Sue Truesdell

 

“One Boy” written and illustrated by Laura Vaccaro Seeger

“Stinky” written and illustrated by Eleanor Davis 

“Wolfsnail: A Backyard Predator” by Sarah C. Campbell, with photographs by Sarah C. Campbell and Richard P. Campbell

Schneider Family Book Award 2009

Schneider Family Book Award for books that embody the artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences. 

“Piano Starts Here: The Young Art Tatum,” written and illustrated by Robert Andrew Parker won the award for young children. 

Leslie Connor is the winner of the middle-school award for “Waiting for Normal.” 

The teen award winner is “Jerk, California,” written by Jonathan Friesen.  (From a web design standpoint, Friesen has a pretty impressive page.)

Coretta Scott King Book Award 2009

Coretta Scott King Book Award recognizing an African American author and illustrator of outstanding books for children and young adults. 

“We Are the Ship: The Story of the Negro League Baseball,” written and illustrated by Kadir Nelson, is the King Author Book winner. 

“The Blacker the Berry,” illustrated by Floyd Cooper and written by Joyce Carol Thomas is the King Illustrator Book winner.

Three King Author Honor Books were selected: 

“The Blacker the Berry” by Joyce Carol Thomas, illustrated by Floyd Cooper

“Keeping the Night Watch” by Hope Anita Smith, illustrated by E.B. Lewis

Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Author Award. Shadra Strickland, illustrator of “Bird,” written by Zetta Elliott, is the Steptoe winner.

Michael L. Printz Award for excellence in literature written for young adults.  

Melina Marchetta, author of “Jellicoe Road,” is the 2009 Printz Award winner.
