Would you like to hear ideas about how to get students and teachers
using community resources to find hidden wonders in their very own town?
Come learn about a fantastic project on the “8 Wonders” of our
community. Based on the “8 Wonders of Kansas” project promoted by the
Kansas Sampler Foundation, our 5th-grade students took field trips to
local businesses and other locations, interviewed people, took digital
photos, and used PhotoStory software to create a narrated slideshow
featuring three local “wonders” in each of eight categories (art,
architecture, commerce, cuisine, customs, geography, history, and

The slideshow was presented to our entire K-6 school and students voted
for their favorites in each category. This is authentic, real-world,
project-based learning at its best (our principal was so excited about
this he personally volunteered to transport kids to their interviews and
to take photos around town). Learn how we did it and think about how
