Student Senate travelled to Camp Wood on Wednesday, where they hosted a team building and activity day for FHL Student Councils. Mr. Finch, the Student Senate sponsor, said that he had a primary goal for the day: “We wanted to present ideas while (the students) could mix and mingle with other people from other schools,” he said.
Frisbee golf was one activity where students had a chance to mingle. “At the end of each of the Frisbee golf holes, students had a statement that they had to answer. They made up three statements about how they could impact the community, what they could do with the school lunch program, how they could raise money without having to bother patrons or merchants in the community.” Nine groups participated in the Frisbee golf, with ten kids in each group. These groups were a random assortment of kids from different places. “Each group had a couple of Herington kids, a couple Osage, a couple Lyndon, etc.” said Mr. Finch. This “intermixed” aspect is what Taylor Alderman enjoyed about the trip: “I liked how we didn’t go with our own groups, and we interacted with other schools for our activities.“
Two of the Frisbee golf holes were activity holes. One was archery, and the other was the tower climb and the hole swing, a favorite among the students. “Those were the bottlenecks, especially the tower climb because we arranged it so six kids out of every ten were able to participate in that. Last year, we only had two kids out of our twelve who got to participate in it.” However, this activity added time to their schedule. “That made it a longer day; it’s good to be home,” said Mr. Finch when StuCo returned.
